The Department of Education and Curriculum is one of five departments at UJ's Faculty of Education.
It is a dynamic and innovative department offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the following fields:
- B.Ed
- PGCE
- Curriculum Studies
- Languages, Literacy and Literature
The department seeks to appoint a suitable candidate at either Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer level to contribute to the initial teacher education programmes (B.Ed. and PGCE), post-graduate teaching and supervision and research in the Sociology of Education and Curriculum Theory.
Applications are invited for the academic post of Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Education and Curriculum Theory. We seek an individual with excellent academic credentials in teaching and research in these fields.
Responsibilities:
- Teaching Sociology of Education and Curriculum Theory at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Supervising student research at the postgraduate level
- Involvement in teaching (contact and blended) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Administration related to teaching and research
- Involvement in national and international research projects
- Procurement of funding for research
- Involvement in core activities of the department, such as academic administration, research, short-course development, evaluation of students during WIL, marketing, and community service projects
To be appointed at the Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer level, the successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
- An appropriate PhD/ D. Ed Degree in Education focusing on the Sociology of Education and/ or Curriculum Theory
- A track record of exemplary teaching abilities
- Experience in teaching large classes
- Experience teaching Sociology of Education and Curriculum Theory at the tertiary level
- Accredited research output in Education
- Supervision of students at the post-graduate level
- A research footprint (presenting at local conferences/research forums)
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
- Excellent written and verbal English communications skills
- Good planning and organisational skills
- Good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues
- Evidence of a well-developed scholarship of teaching and learning
- Adept at teaching and development of materials for online education
Recommendations:
- Teaching experience in Sociology of Education and Curriculum Theory at a tertiary level
- Experience in teaching quantitative research methodology
- A defined research trajectory that has resulted in good-quality peer-reviewed publications
- Successful supervision of Masters and PhD students to completion
