PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The appointed person will join the History Subject Group in the School of Social Sciences, comprising of a dynamic and growing collective of historians. If appointed, you will be expected to ensure continuous quality teaching & learning; to contribute to strengthening the Subject Group's research outputs; to work together with the administration of the Subject Group; as well as to sustain impact through community engagement initiatives.





The History Subject Group at the NWU is a department with diverse research foci and projects by staff and its postgraduate component. Some notable fields of research relate to regional, environmental and cultural histories. The staff of History are working in an aligned environment across three campuses on Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom and Mahikeng. The NWU History Subject Group encourages qualified candidates to apply and thus join a team of historians to build and maintain a globally recognised Subject Group known for quality teaching and learning, research, and community engagement.

Teaching

- Teach modules in History (undergraduate and post-graduate).

Research

- Supervision of History honours research projects and MA, PhD dissertations/theses .
- Create and facilitate new research projects and apply for research grants.
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and as academic books.
- Attend and present papers at national and international conferences.

Community engagement







- Contribute to activities and initiatives that relate to student skills development, especially through public and community engagement that bring together research and teaching.

Academic Citizenship

- Serve on editorial boards and committees of academic associations; participate in the external examination and moderation for other universities and participate in peer-review processes for academic publication.

Leadership in the NWU:

- Serve on committees as well as in subject and programme leadership positions when needed.

Administration:

- Assist with administration pertaining to teaching and research and community engagement projects.

Marketing:

- Engage in recruitment initiatives to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students.

- A PhD (NQF Level 10) in History.
- A minimum of five (5)





years' experience in teaching and learning at undergraduate and post graduate level at a reputable tertiary institution.
- A substantial record of quality publication in accredited disciplinary academic journals and/ or in books published by reputable academic presses.
- Proof of post-graduate guidance to completion.

ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCE

- Membership with Historical societies.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

- Supervise postgraduate research.
- Develop quality undergraduate and post graduate curricula.
- Competent administrative skills pertaining to research and teaching.
- Knowledge of current higher education teaching/pedagogical approaches.
- Online learning platform competency.






- Knowledge of funding systems and how to secure funding.
- Conduct independent historical research and publish in reputable, highly sited journals and with respected academic book publishers.
- Communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team in the various multilingual and multicultural environments of the NWU.
- Be able to work well with a diverse group of colleagues, students and other university stakeholders.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

- Must have the capacity to mentor senior students and junior colleagues.
- Must be able to effectively independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to work well with a diverse range of colleagues, students, and stakeholders.






- Must be able to effectively resolve conflicts as may arise in the workplace.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
