Introduction
Background
South Africa is facing a rapidly increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). To meet the challenge of NCDs, a unique collaboration of Wits Faculty of Health Sciences specialists, epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and The National Cancer Registry has formed a multidisciplinary division. The Non-Communicable Diseases Research Division (NCDRD) was launched in 2017 within the Wits Health Consortium.
Description
Main purpose of the job:
- To complete oral glucose tolerance tests, draw blood samples, HIV testing and counseling, participant management, and referral, and assist with data collection and management
Location:
- DPHRU - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto - Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
- Educate participants about project aims and information
- Provide study information and administer informed consent to study participants.
- Ensure that screening, consenting, and enrolment of participants take place in line with project protocol as and when required
- Complete an oral glucose tolerance test
- Administer questionnaires
- Escort participant referred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for admission if required
- Assist with data entry and checking using REDCap
- Keeping and maintaining screening and enrolment logs
- Develop and provide reports as required by the study coordinator
- Ensure laboratory results are attended to, abnormal results are reported to the coordinator, filed and recorded on flow charts, and making sure that participants are referred accordingly
- Ensure timeous resolution of data queries raised by the research team
Required minimum education and training:
- Grade 12
- Qualified as an Enrolled Nurse
- Undergraduate Degree in Health Sciences
- Valid Driver's License
Required minimum work experience:
- 3 Years' experience as an Enrolled Nurse
- 1 Year's experience in Research
Professional body registration:
- Registered with the South African Nursing Council as an Enrolled Nurse
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
- Good Clinical Practice/Human Subject Protection certification advantageous
- Ability to lead and work independently as well as be part of a multidisciplinary team
- Flexibility to adapt to changes in study requirements
- Empathetic toward people living with HIV/AIDS
- Must be able to drive
- Ability to speak local languages
- Computer literacy
- Willingness to learn
- It is expected that s/he will apply consistent adherence to research and GCP practices
