The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) has a vacancy for Laboratory Technician in its Crop Nutrition and Soils Laboratory. This position will assume responsibility for the routine operations of the lab and will report to the Soil Scientist. This position is based in Mount Edgecombe
The incumbent will be responsible for providing a professional service to SASRI scientists and growers by undertaking the following laboratory operations
Duties and Responsibilities
- Recording and registering all samples and their associated analyses
- Planning the flow of samples to ensure timeous analyses
- Preparing chemical solutions to be used in analyses
- Evaluating new methodologies for analyses
- Recording results of analyses; capturing the information electronically
- Performing calculations using raw data
- Calibration, and use of simple routine analytical equipment (pH/EC meters, spectrometers, balances, centrifuges, pipettes, ovens, digester equipment, fume hoods, sieve shakers, penetrometer, etc)
- The use of sophisticated laboratory analysers that include, NIR/MIR spectrometers, TOC analysers, segment flower analysers, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, image analyser
- Collecting and collating data from other labs
- Preparing easy to follow, step-by-step instructions and documentation of new procedures and assisting in the training of laboratory staff in the use of techniques
- Maintaining and cleaning all equipment and glassware daily
- Keeping record of chemical usage and ordering replacements timeously
- Ensuring occupational health and safety and environmental compliance in the lab
- Collecting soil samples from field trials when required
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
- Diploma/Degree in Analytical Chemistry
- At least 2 years' work experience (Experience in a soils or related laboratory environment would be advantageous)
- Basic Computer skills
- Code EB Driver's license
