Introduction

Nosa Auditing and Inspection services is sourcing a suitable candidate to place as a Environmental HSE officer on Kusile Power station for a Limited Duration contract with a very strong possibility of extension for a longer period.

Start date: ASAP (Must be able to start immediately)
Duration: 2 and a half months (31 December 2024)

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide support to the Site EHS Manager in the implementation and maintenance of the Site EHS Management System.
Ensure full compliance with Legislated, Client and Environmental requirements
Supervise site activities to ensure that the defined site EHS and more specifically Environmental, rules are complied with.Provide the client with a written monthly report,





detailing both compliance with the Environmental Specification as well as environmental performance.
Maintain a record of incidents (spills, impacts, complaints, legal transgressions, etc) as well as corrective and preventive actions taken, for submission to the client at the scheduled meetings.
Identify and assess actual or potential aspects and impacts of the project on the environment and maintain a register of the identified aspects and impacts.
Assist with the drafting of Environmental Method Statements where such knowledge/expertise is lacking.
Conduct regular internal inspections and audits to ensure that the system for implementation of the Environmental Specification is operating effectively. The audit shall verify that a procedure is in place to ensure that:

-the environmental method statements and the Environmental Specifications (ES) being used are up to date;






- variations to the ES and environmental method statements and non-compliances and corrective actions are documented;
- appropriate environmental training of personnel is undertaken; and
- emergency procedures are in place and effectively communicated to personnel

Advise on the rectification of any pollution, contamination or damage to the project site, rights of way and adjacent land.
Attend regular site meetings (scheduled and ad hoc).
Arrange the presentation of environmental awareness training to all staff, Contractors and Sub-contractors and monitor the undertaking by the Contractor(s) of environmental awareness training for all new personnel on-site.
Carry out continuous inspections of the site areas (minimum 80 % of the time in the field), treat and report any discrepancy.
Act immediately on unsafe acts and conditions observed at site.






Assist the Site EHS Manager in ensuring compliance of site activities with the Project Specific EHS Plan, guidelines and work instructions.
Participate in the implementation of the site EHS training programme by providing EHS inductions
and supervising Tool Box Meetings.
Provide support and advice to site personnel to prevent injury to personnel, damage to plant and equipment, fire,ensuring environmental protection and site security.
Lead by example in complying with the site EHS rules.
Issue a daily report of activities whenever required.
Ensure identification of significant environmental aspects, related impacts and compliance to relevant legal requirements
Facilitate reviews on practices,





procedures and systems implemented on site to ensure all statutory regulations are met, within the framework of the Environmental Management System.
Categorise incidents in accordance with the Incident Reporting System, follow-up on and check that appropriate corrective measures are implemented using the correct investigation and reporting procedures.
Further analyse and trend environmental incidents on the project site, including recommendations to management regarding alternative preventative measures.
Develop a waste management strategy aligned with project specific requirements.
Review and assist with the management of Environmental Management Plans relating to site,
including the co-ordination of associated EMP audits.






Ensure compliance with Lifesaving Principles and DIR 057 – Minimum EHS Requirements for SPS
Develop and manage cleaning execution strategy to align with O&M; scope.
Develop and manage schedules and ensuring that all cleaning tasks are completed efficiently.
Conduct inspections on required cleaning standards as to ensure compliance.
Address and report deviations or deficiencies promptly.
Provide continuous guidance to the cleaning team related to program and effectiveness.
Ensures that cleaning activities comply with safety regulations and addresses any safety concerns or incidents promptly.
Interface and coordinate with cleaning staff, other departments, and management to convey instructions, gather feedback, and address any issues or concerns.






Keeping accurate records and documentation related to cleaning activities, schedules, inspections, and training for accountability and performance evaluation.
Preparing daily cleaning & EHS reports and submit timeously to relevant stakeholders.
Monitoring and capturing the performance results of the site teams EHS deliverables (PTOs, BSO, GPI).
Ensuring that timesheets of the cleaning team area signed & submitted weekly.

Managerial (Administration / People)
• To give instructions to personnel relevant to environmental protection
• To call for the cessation of works if where immediate serious safety and environmental risk is identified
• Has the right to interrupt any activity whenever such action is necessary to meet project and organizational Environment,





Health and Safety requirements

• Carry out any other specific task or duty defined by the Site EHS Officer to support the implementation of the site EHS Management System.

Desired Experience & Qualification

MUST have Criteria:

• Relevant Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma or B-Tech
• Training on applicable environmental legislation relating to Environmental Conservation and Pollution Prevention.
• Waste Management , Fly ash experience
• ISO14001 implementation and auditing experience
• Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
• Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis
• SACPCMP Registration as CHSM or CHSO






• Registered as a Certificated Natural Scientist or Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions
• Power plant experience will be an advantage with a minimum of 5 years
