1. 1. Job Summary
Assumes 24 hour responsibility for overall management of an old age care facility in Alexandria . Responsible for the holistic care of patients and supervision of all personnel. Provide clinical and professional leadership to the team to ensure good governance. Ensure effective delivery against performance indicators whilst reporting to the General Manager.
2. Key Performance Areas
2.1 Leadership
- Provides direction and consultation to all those who report to him/her
- Delegated effectively by entrusting responsibility and authority to others
- Collaborates in the establishment of services, clinic standards, policies and procedures
- Represents Joseph Gerard Care Centre in in all nursing and other operational activities with staff
- Assumes management of on call responsibilities for nursing
2.2 Professionalism
- Promotes health care to all based upon the standards of ethics of the nursing profession
- Integrates current knowledge of nursing and management theories and concepts into the practice environment
- Establishes goals for personal growth
- Creates an environment that facilitates learning
- Makes decisions that consider the needs of the organisation and staff
- Serves as a consultant in areas of expertise
- Interprets the role of nursing to other departments
2.3 Planning
- Ensures creative planning for health care delivery
- Identifies and prioritises educational needs for staff
- Identifies problems with quality of patient care and initiates action for resolution
- Collaborates with others to ensure appropriate placement of patients
- Informs staff of service and organisation policy and practice changes
- Interprets information and activities of health care to staff, patients and families
- Plans and co-ordinates annual medical budget needs
- Gives ongoing performance feedback to peers and management
- Establishes expectation of the staff roles in evaluating and ensuring patient care outcomes
2.4 Resource management
- Assist in recruitment, selection and placement of staff reporting to her
- Develops and implements long range planning for meeting the human and material resource needs
- Analyse personnel turnover and develops retention strategies
2.5 Accountability
- Assumes responsibility for all nursing and operational activities
- Ensures effectiveness of patient care given
- Ensures corrective actions taken as needed, implementation and success
- Ensures staff compliance with established policies, procedures, standards and registration
- Hold personnel accountable for all activities in their job descriptions
- Submit appropriate reports and attend management meetings
- Counsels staff as appropriate
3. Secondary functions
The following are not primary functions of the Nursing Services Manager, but have been allocated to this position for the benefit of the organisation:

- Attendance of functions at the centre
- Liase and network with relevant bodies and organisations
- Maintain and develop professional nursing knowledge in line with requirement s of the post
4.1 Relationships
Supervised by: General Manager
Sub-ordinates: Professional nurse; Enrolled Nurse, Enrolled Nursing Assistant; Care Worker, Domestics
Liases with: Medical Officer, Physiotherapist,
Podiatrist, Admin Clerk, Social Worker
1. 4. Knowledge and experience
Leadership and management ability, excellent interpersonal relations. Demonstrates the ability to manage human and financial resources, self directed, able to communicate clearly in writing and verbally. Ability to implement change for positive outcomes in a highly complex environment. A minimum of 5 years experience in nursing. Knowledge, understanding, acceptance and support of the relevant laws, policies and organisational objectives of the nursing service.
