Introduction
The primary purpose of this position is to optimize the Splints and VO 500 Department production process to meet the set and agreed KPAā€™s viz. Output, Material Cost and Usage, Labour Cost, Quality, Customer Complaints, Waste, Housekeeping, Human Resources, Safety, Non-acceptance of Poor Performance and Continuous Improvement through the effective utilisation of manpower, machinery and material resources. The role reports to the Operations Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
Production
- To manage, direct and monitor the performance of his subordinates to ensure that critical performance areas and targets are achieved.
- Ensuring that the Work Instruction requirements are adhered to at all times.
- Maintaining machine efficiencies, product quality and output requirements.
- Conduct random inspections of production equipment and to ensure that maintenance inspections on the various equipment are carried out as required for scheduled maintenance.
- Ensure that production is scheduled to allow the Maintenance Teams to do scheduled maintenance work.
- Ensure that sufficient labour of the correct caliber is available within each department to meet the daily production requirements and to recruit competent personnel when required.
- Monitor the attendance and time keeping of subordinates and labour to minimise disruptions and where necessary initiate appropriate corrective action.
- Ensure that the relevant information is forwarded to the Human Resource department to be captured.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices through the effective implementation of housekeeping principles to ensure that the subsequent monitoring of housekeeping standards through weekly housekeeping inspections and completion of the relevant Housekeeping Reports take place.
- Ensure that Work Standards and Standard Operating Procedures are regularly reviewed and where possible improved.
Raw Material
- Monitor and investigate instances of high/low variances on raw materials against amounts budgeted.
- Communicate the Daily Budget figures to subordinates and discuss areas of concern with regard to variances and corrective action.
- Monitor material usage to ensure that budgeted figures are achieved.
- Monitor and control waste within the Department to ensure that optimum efficiencies are maintained on all machines.
- Ensure that subordinates are made aware of waste levels and that investigations are conducted, and corrective action taken when instances of waste occur.
- Ensure that sub-standard raw materials are isolated to minimise their effect on product quality.
- Monitor Floor Stock Materials and ensure that the correct figures are reported on.
Maintenance
- Conduct random inspections of production equipment and to ensure that maintenance inspections on the various equipment in the VPO Department are carried out as required for scheduled maintenance.
- To ensure that production is scheduled to allow the VPO Maintenance Teams to do scheduled maintenance work.
- Ensure that the subsequent monitoring of housekeeping standards through daily housekeeping inspections and completion of the relevant Housekeeping Reports take place.
- Ensure that Work Standards and Standard Operating Procedures are regularly reviewed and where possible improved.
Quality
- Ensure a high standard of product quality.
- Ensuring that the Operators, through the conducting of random checks of their Process Control Sheets timeously carry out all process control checks.
- Where necessary revising Process Control Sheets to ensure that adequate testing of product takes place to ensure standards are maintained.
- Ensuring that corrective action is promptly taken where equipment is found to be faulty to minimise the effect of downtime.
- Ensure that through proper maintenance the machines are at an optimum condition to avoid poor quality products being manufactured.
- Ensuring that substandard raw materials are dealt with i.e. communication to Suppliers re the problem,
credit for materials rejected and return of materials to Supplier as per procedure.
Human Resource
- Maintain good interpersonal relations within the Department
- Adequately utilising the skills of subordinates to ensure that training plans for subordinates are developed, based on multiskilling requirements and Skills Inventories.
- Ensure that the Skills Inventories are monitored to establish what training and development is required and must be undertaken in the Department.
- Ensure that training is scheduled and undertaken against gaps identified as a result of staff movements and competency assessments.
- Review Job Descriptions when required with the Operations Manager and Human Resources Manager.
- Ensure that the Companyā€™s Disciplinary Code and Procedure are consistently and fairly applied in order to maintain discipline within the workplace.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Minimum Grade 12
- Tertiary level (M +3) Production Management Qualification
- Basic Excel & Microsoft Office knowledge and application
- A Bachelorā€™s degree in Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- 3-6 yearsā€™ experience in a manufacturing environment
